Well here it is the early-morning after. Four jam-packed days flew by faster than you can believe. We're not live anymore, but yesterday got away from me and there is some fill-in to do. Let's catch up with another post or two today, and then weekly through August as I go through notes and video. Does that sound like a plan? First of all, wow. Congratulations to recipients of the 2012 Lewton-Brain Foldform Award. Click that link and feast your eyes. Absolutely stunning work. Repeat demos Charles began the day by asking which folds we'd like to see demonstrated again, as review. Each morning begins this way. We pick up samples from the huge collection on the table and Charles works through them one by one. Today's requests included an extruded line fold, a chased t-fold (chasing on air), boat variations, and that beautiful cross-fold/T-fold combination. Charles also gave us a ruffle demo, reviewed scoring/bending methods, and talked more about patinas. Just a note... through all of these demos, Charles often hops online to show us artists' work that uses the particular fold or fold family he is teaching. It really helps with perspective and application ideas. |
Artist statement: I have always been aware of fold forming as a structural technique, however I came to the process through a desire to give the blank sheets of silver, that come from the bullion suppliers, some character before starting to form the vessels. The lines on the surface exaggerate the movement of the metal compressing and expanding across the surface. |

LOL with me as photographer it kind of looks like I'm not here. Thought I'd slip in a couple just to prove I am :-)
Later update... Charles posted this very kind comment to the blog during the conference:
"Sue, what a lovely, fantastic, deep job you are doing! thank you so much for all your work!!!!" Charles Lewton-Brain

This short clip demonstrates how to open a boat fold. It's called the lever method, and is done inside a vise with two very quick movements on each side, over and back. This works because the first action (over) opens and work-hardens the first fold. The only choice for the next action (back) is to open the next fold. So simple and perfect.
This works on other similar fold configurations, too, e.g. the t-fold.

Cross folds from this morning. Feast your eyes on the first one in this slide show. OMG.
This was followed by a slide show lecture about folds using the hydraulic press.

We began the morning of Day 3 with a review demo of the beautiful Romero fold, which is the leaf with a spine running through the middle, followed by how to make a feather. Next was a forged Good fold, which was actually new because yesterday's Good fold was made in the rolling mill.
Boat folds came next with a bunch of variations. The boat is another base form, like the star shape. The second shot in the slideshow is a basic one.
We've been through cross folds too... I'll get something out there when I can.
Charles also shared a list of his favorite books for metals. I snagged that for us:

Simply leave a comment on any of these live blog posts (Aug 2-6) -- any impressions, feedback, questions... along with your email address (which will not be visible online.) That's it! |
Apologies that I've not kept up on answering blog posts as I usually do. I've read them, though, and really appreciate your comments so far. Hearing from you is what makes this worthwhile, for me.
Center for Metal Arts
A little applause and gratitude is in order for our hosts, Center for Metal Arts. These are wonderful people, not to mention amazingly talented. I absolutely love being here.
You might have noticed a bit of this gate in the background of some of the pics. Thought you'd like to see it... the photo doesn't do it justice, especially with all the stuff behind it, but here you go. Maybe I'll get a few detail shots and add them later.

You'll enjoy this one. A circle of copper gets matching wedge t-folds and becomes a bowl.
Hands-on time: Day 2
Hands-on time today was fantastic. We had about two hours to play; here are some pics of students and just a few pieces of their work this afternoon. Will try to snap more in the morning and add them here.
