Results of the SueLacy Wired live blog drawing Congrats Paul, Deb, and Jessica!!! And thank you for taking the time to post these great comments on the live blog during the conference: Paul Boulay "Thanks for posting these inspiring photos and video clips. I need to try the patina (ammonia and H2O2) method. Disproportionally awesome results given the inexpensive materials. CLB is one of my heroes." Deb Jemmott "WOW! Stunning work. I love how the fold forming is being pushed into new territory. Thank you, Sue!" Jessica Armstrong "These demonstration images are great. I so wish I could have been there to see all of these in person. The videos are great as well. This particular cross fold is beautiful. Thanks for uploading all the pictures and videos for all of us that could not attend." More to come
I've enjoyed all the comments and will add a post soon that shares feedback from blog visitors as well as feedback from class attendees. I'll also be posting one or two short video clips from the conference in the next couple days. Catching up on family, too, so they will dictate the timetable more than I will. ;-) August 2012 on SueLacy Wired is dedicated to the 5th annual Charles Lewton-Brain Conference on Foldforming, taking place Aug 3-6 at the Center for Metal Arts in downstate NY. Charles has picked out samples for the giveaway! Here they are: Anyone who has posted a comment on this blog series Aug 2-6 is entered into the drawing. Your first comment is your entry. They will be numbered in the order they appear on each post. Three winning numbers will be generated from random.org; the first number that pops up gets the first sample, etc. I'll contact the winner via the email address on your post, so please include it! You'll have a week to respond with your shipping address... and that's it! Drawing will be tomorrow. I'm really here, by the way... LOL with me as photographer it kind of looks like I'm not here. Thought I'd slip in a couple just to prove I am :-) Later update... Charles posted this very kind comment to the blog during the conference: "Sue, what a lovely, fantastic, deep job you are doing! thank you so much for all your work!!!!" Giveaway reminder
Apologies that I've not kept up on answering blog posts as I usually do. I've read them, though, and really appreciate your comments so far. Hearing from you is what makes this worthwhile, for me. Center for Metal ArtsA little applause and gratitude is in order for our hosts, Center for Metal Arts. These are wonderful people, not to mention amazingly talented. I absolutely love being here. You might have noticed a bit of this gate in the background of some of the pics. Thought you'd like to see it... the photo doesn't do it justice, especially with all the stuff behind it, but here you go. Maybe I'll get a few detail shots and add them later. If you want to see more of their work, the first post of this live blog series takes you upstairs to their showroom / museum, here.

Charles has offered to put up a foldform sample or two from the conference. How cool is that?
Post a comment on my blog during the conference (anytime before Aug 7) to be entered in the drawing. You might just end up with something created by Charles' expert hand. Also scroll down to hear about a GIVEAWAY. Center for Metal Arts What to expect? This will be my attempt to share what it's like to learn the art of foldforming from Charles Lewton-Brain, its inventor. I was fortunate to be here last year, too. So I know in advance that the conference will be off the charts fantastic. Charles is a world-renowned goldsmith and spellbinding educator. Think part MacGyver, part Mythbusters, and part Leonardo da Vinci. I’m the live blogger, yes, but also a participating student. As the conference unfolds, I’ll write about what’s happening and share photos. Hopefully some video clips, too. No streaming, but I’ll put up reasonably frequent updates (my goal is every hour or two) and I promise not to forget you. The easy stuff will go up in real time during the day Aug 3-6. I usually post to my blog weekly, so after I get home I'll sort through trickier content and share a bit more on my remaining three posts this month. Giveaway?Yes! I'd really like to hear from you on the blog, especially during the conference. Please post your comments, questions, and impressions. Your ideas may help guide my blogging topics, so don't be shy. When you do, include your email address (it will not show up publicly) and you'll be entered into a random drawing to win a prize. I don't have prizes picked out yet, so stay tuned on that. I think that's it for now. More very soon!
(Are you a metalsmith interested in foldforming? Join our official Facebook group.) I had a blast with the 2nd annual One-a-day jewelry challenge. The best part was having so many lovely people visiting to see the pieces; I really enjoyed your interest, comments, suggestions, and good wishes. During March, readers visited from (ordered by visit frequency) United States, Canada, Italy, United Kingdom, Greece, Russia, India, Egypt, Venezuela, Brazil, Croatia, Australia, France, South Korea, Portugal, Sweden, Austria, Columbia, Germany, Hungary, Kuwait, and Lithuania -- with an average visit duration of 59 minutes! That is pretty awesome. And now for the giveaway... The winner is... Katie Thompson!!! Katie, I will contact you for your mailing address. Your prize choices are days 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, 14, 17, 21, and 25. You can click on those days to view full posts OR scroll down to see the entire month's photos. The giveaway choices are shown with an asterisk (*) by the caption. Here is a review of my March 2012 One-a-day Challenge. Watch a short video or just scroll down to see the photos. I post on Wednesdays, so please stop back -- and THANK YOU for your support this month!
Welcome to day 2 of my March 2012 One-a-day jewelry challenge. This is a copper leaf pendant with an apatite gemstone and sterling silver hanging charm.
**This piece is a giveaway choice.** So I've been asked how much preparation I do for these March One-a-day challenges. Do I plan it all out and draw up a month's worth of designs in advance? Oh my gosh. No. I wake up most mornings without a plan and just dig in. And the truth is, if I had it all planned I wouldn't learn much. For example, I'm getting to know a brand new tool right now... each piece helps me discover what's possible/fun, which leads me to projects I couldn't have thought up earlier. So no, I don't know what tomorrow's piece will be! Check my March 1 post for details about the giveaway, and how you can enter.
Welcome to day ONE of my 2nd annual March One-a-day jewelry challenge! I've been so excited about it. I woke up this morning like it was Christmas and couldn't wait to get started. I hope you'll follow along with me. A word of warning -- I just got a new tool that helps me corrugate metal. I will try not to use it on absolutely everything... but it is so. much. fun. I go a little crazy over new tools anyway, but this one has me giggling. So here you go, submission for day one -- a foldform cuff, chased and corrugated. But don't stop here. Enter the giveaway!
To enter:
1. Post a comment on any One-a-day blog post (current or previous day) during March 2012. Tell me what you think of a piece and why, and you're automatically entered. Comments must be added before midnight on March 31st, US ET. 2. Include your email address with your post. 3. Please also like my Facebook page, here. The drawing On April 1st, I'll draw a random name from among those who commented. Your name will be assigned a number (chronologically, based on comment order) and the winning number will be generated from http://www.random.org. One entry per person -- your first comment will enter you, but you're welcome to comment as often as you like! If you are outside the U.S., I welcome your entries! If you win, I will charge a bit of shipping, but only the amount that's higher than standard U.S. postage. A little about the challenge I will create and post a new piece of jewelry (or accessories) every day this month. They will be new, improved, or re-interpreted designs; and/or, they will be skill-building pieces in areas that I need to practice. If you want to see what last year's One-a-day challenge was like, check out my home page and scroll to the bottom, or watch a quick 3-minute video recap here. See you tomorrow! As I described in my last post, I'm having symptoms in my hands and wrists preventing me from doing much jewelry making at the moment. Carpal tunnel is confirmed in both hands along with two pinched nerves in my neck. Yesterday's physical made me slightly less optimistic since my doctor reminded me that I had bone spurs identified in my neck in 2008, so the next step is an MRI to determine if they've become a factor. I also have a Cleveland Clinic appointment on Jan 4. I would not be pleased if I were told to switch professions, I can tell you that. So on to an interesting cosmic question... recently I entered a drawing for 38 jewelry-making books by Lark Books. It was just on a whim (since I never win anything) after seeing a link posted by Teresa Masters (wonderful facebook friend and admin of metalsmith.co) There were 865 entries and I WON. Here is the evidence -- received yesterday: So the romantic in me wants to think these came as a message -- don't worry, keep the faith, this is just a little bump in the road and jewelry creation is still my future.
Silly? Coincidence? Cosmic something or other? What do you think? Holiday Giveaway Alert!! It's time to do a giveaway. What's in it for me? Your feedback about my jewelry. What's in it for you? Keep them yourself or stuff them into a stocking! To enter: 1. Post a comment on THIS blog post before midnight on December 11th, US ET. 2. Tell me which pair of earrings you would like to win, and WHY. 3. Include your email address with your post. Please also like my Facebook page, here. If you want a second entry: 1. Include your email address with your post. The drawing On December 12th, I'll draw a random name from among those who commented. Your name will be assigned a number (chronologically, based on comment order) and the winning number will be generated from http://www.random.org. If you are outside the U.S., I welcome your entries but will need to charge shipping if it's higher than U.S. postage. Other news this week Talk about neglect! I don't remember the last time I updated my Gallery Photos page. I spent today cleaning out, updating, and organizing it. Please take a look when you have a minute. My awesome daughter Kathy let me snap some pics this week. Here she is modeling some recent pieces. Kathy makes my jewelry look great, doesn't she? :-) I've been working a lot with pennies and nickels for Winterfair. All the pics above (except for the pendant) are pennies or nickels. And here is my fav so far -- the chain and clasp are handcrafted of sterling silver, the leaves are fold form pennies, and the ovals are hammered nickels. Have a great week, and I hope to hear from you!
